Governance & leadership

Who is accountable,
and for what.

A school should be able to name the person responsible for your child's progress, wellbeing and safety — and tell you when they meet, what they review and how you reach them.

The structure

Four tiers, and nothing
hidden between them.

Each tier below has a defined remit, a defined meeting rhythm and a defined route for a parent to reach it. Nobody at Keystage is accountable for everything, which is how things actually get done.

Tier one

The Management Trust

Sets direction, approves investment and holds the school to its promises. Reviews academic outcomes, safeguarding, staffing and finance at every monthly sitting, and signs off the annual plan.

Meets monthly · Reached through the Principal’s office in writing

Tier two

The Principal

Accountable for academic standards, staff quality, discipline and the culture of the school. Chairs the weekly leadership meeting, observes teaching, and owns the relationship with the Trust.

Available to parents by appointment · At the gate most mornings

Tier three

Academic Coordinators & Heads of Department

One coordinator for primary, one for secondary, with subject leaders beneath them. They own schemes of work, assessment calendars, laboratory use, teacher observation and the quality of written feedback.

Weekly departmental meetings · Reachable directly by parents

Tier four

Class Teachers, Wellbeing & Admissions

Your first point of contact and the people who know your child by name. Includes the class teacher, the trained counsellor, the care and wellbeing team and the admissions office.

Contactable every working day · Same-day response standard

The leadership

The two people whose
names are on all of it.

Keystage is a family-run institution rather than a chain. The people below are on campus, reachable, and personally answerable for the school their names sit above.

Chairman

A message from our leadership

Why this school exists, in their own words.

Keystage is a family-run institution rather than a chain. The two people below are on campus, reachable, and personally answerable for it.

Mr. Rajesh
Chairman

Mr. Rajesh

Founder & Chairman, Keystage Trust

We did not set out to build a chain of schools. We set out to build one campus, in our own town, that we would be content to send our own children to — and then to keep it small enough that we still know their names.

Everything the Trust approves is measured against a single question: does this make the child’s day better? Paint, buses, appointments, fee decisions, hiring. If the answer is no, it does not get funded, however good it looks in a brochure.

I am on campus most weeks and my door is open to any parent who asks.

Director, Keystage Pre School & School of Excellence

A school is not its building. It is roughly two hundred small judgements made every day by the adults in it — how a crying child is met at the gate, whether a teacher marks honestly, how quickly somebody returns your call.

My work is to make sure those judgements are good ones, consistently, across both schools. That means capped class sizes we do not quietly raise, teachers who are trained rather than merely hired, and parents who are told the truth about their child early rather than late.

If something here falls short of what we have promised you, I would rather hear it from you than not.

The offices

Nine posts that run
the school.

Named profiles, qualifications and photographs for every post-holder are shared at your campus visit and in the school prospectus.

Chairman & Trustees

Custodians of the institution. Approve strategy, fees, capital investment and senior appointments. Accountable to no one but the children, which is rather the point.

Principal

Runs the school. Academic standards, staff development, discipline, culture and the daily working of the campus.

Academic Coordinator — Primary

Grades 1 to 5. Curriculum delivery, early literacy and numeracy standards, and the transition from UKG into Grade 1.

Academic Coordinator — Secondary

Grades 6 to 12. Edexcel scheme delivery, examination entries, laboratory and coursework standards.

Heads of Department

Subject leaders for English, mathematics, the sciences, humanities, languages, computing and the arts.

Student Wellbeing & Counselling

Pastoral care, transition support, a trained counsellor and an anti-bullying policy that is enforced rather than framed.

University & Careers Guidance

Subject-choice advice from Grade 8, university shortlisting from Grade 10, applications and references thereafter.

Safeguarding & Campus Safety

Police verification of staff, CCTV governance, visitor control, pick-up authorisation, drills and incident reporting.

Admissions Office

Enquiries, campus visits, documentation, fee queries — and your named contact through the whole of the first term.

The rhythm

What gets reviewed,
and how often.

Governance that only happens when something goes wrong is not governance. This is the standing calendar, and it runs whether or not there is a problem.

  • Daily — attendance, safeguarding log, incident register
  • Weekly — leadership meeting, departmental meetings, lesson observation
  • Monthly — Trust sitting on outcomes, safeguarding, staffing and finance
  • Termly — assessment review, parent meetings, evacuation drill, policy audit
  • Annually — academic outcomes review, staff appraisal, fee and budget approval, strategic plan

The policies

Issued in writing,
on request.

Every policy below is a document, not a principle. Any parent may ask for a copy at any time.

Safeguarding & child protection

Staff verification, reporting lines, visitor control and the code of conduct.

Academic & assessment

Schemes of work, examination policy, reporting standards and remedial support.

Behaviour & anti-bullying

Expectations, graduated response, and what a parent can expect us to do.

Fee, refund & grievance

Fee schedule, refund terms, and a written route for raising a concern.

Reaching us

How a parent raises
something that matters.

Four steps, each with a name and a timeframe. Most concerns are settled at step one, and that is by design.

Step one

Class teacher

The person who knows your child. Reachable every working day, with a response the same day.

Step two

Head of Department

For a subject or academic matter. Response within two working days.

Step three

Academic Coordinator

For anything spanning subjects, or a wellbeing concern. Meeting within three working days.

Step four

The Principal

Unresolved matters, in writing. Acknowledged within two days, answered within seven.

Step five

The Trust

In writing through the Principal’s office. Considered at the next monthly sitting.
